Gorn mentions that the Second Great Awakening happened due to a debate about the boundary between religion and government. Leaders of the Christian congregation were greatly dismayed that there was no mention of God in the constitution. Christian interpreted the ratification of clause one as separating the government further from religion and the American people (Gorn 103). The church used an evangelical approach to persuade other churches members to join their congregation and grow market shares. The American Temperance Society was founded in 1826, and by 1834 there were over 5,000 local and regional branches of the society throughout the nation (Gorn 103). In the years 1830 and 1850, through legislation and persuasion, the Temperance Society was able to pass reforms that reduced the consumption of alcohol.
